Ambassador of Ireland wishes everyone in Japan a Happy St Patrick’s Day and highlights Ireland’s recent economic recovery
On 17 March Ireland marks its National Day Saint Patrick’s Day.
Nowadays, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide. And in Japan too! All over Japan, festivals, concerts and parades take place throughout March. People wear green, a colour representing the beauty of Ireland’s landscape.
Ireland has a great story to tell: following the Eurozone economic crisis and a banking crisis at home, Ireland has turned its finances around and recent figures show GDP growth of over 7% in 2015, the highest in the Eurozone for the second year in a row. This trend is set to continue into 2017. Growth is broadly-based, with progress in Ireland’s major economic sectors, including tourism, which recorded over 8 million visitors in 2015, an increase of over 13%. The achievements of Ireland’s economic policies are internationally recognized, with investment grade ratings from the two main credit-ratings agencies. This positive economic outlook has, in turn, fostered thriving trade and investment links with Japan, which is now Ireland’s 10th largest trading partner.
“We have niche strengths in the pharma, ICT, GreenTech, FinTech, aviation, and agrifood sectors and these are a good match for Japan” said Ireland’s Ambassador, Ms Anne Barrington. “Irish exports of goods to Japan in 2015 amounted to €3.88bn, an increase of 120% on the previous year. Japan is Asia’s largest investor in Ireland”.
“The Saint Patrick’s Day festivities bring people together to celebrate our shared interests in culture and tradition”, she said, “I hope that everyone will enjoy St Patrick’s Day, wherever they are in Japan!”

セント・パトリックス・デーは世界中でお祝いされている祝日です。ここ日本でも、3月の一ヵ月間、フェスティバルやコンサート、パレードなどの祝賀イベントが全国各地で開催されます。こうしたイベントでは、アイルランドの美しい自然を象徴する色「グリーン」を身につけるのが定番となっています。
アイルランドから朗報があります。ユーロ圏の経済危機と国内の金融危機の後、アイルランドは財政再建に成功し、最近の統計によると2015年に7%以上のGDP成長率を達成しました。これは2年連続でユーロ圏内最高の成長率です。この傾向は2017年まで続くことが見込まれています。成長は経済の主要部門において、広範囲に渡って達成されています。これには観光業も含まれており、2015年の訪問者数は前年より13%以上の増加で800万人を超えています。アイルランドの経済政策の成果は国際的にも評価されており、２つの主要格付け機関から投資レベルの格付けを得ています。このように好調な経済情勢から、日本との通商・投資関係も活性化しています。日本は現在、アイルランドにとって第10位の貿易相手国です。
駐日アイルランド大使アン・バリントンは次のように述べています。
「アイルランドは製薬、ICT、グリーン・テクノロジー、フィンテック、航空、農業食品といった特定の分野に強みを持っており、これらは日本市場に合致するものです。2015年のアイルランドから日本への貿易輸出額は38.8億ユーロで、前年比120％でした。日本は、アイルランドにとってアジア最大の投資国です。」 「セント・パトリックス・デーのイベントは、文化や伝統への共通の関心を祝い、人々を結びつける機会となります。日本の皆様がセント・パトリックス・デーを楽しんでくださることを願っております！」
